Ikea’s Sinnerlig Installation: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Design

The Concept of Sinnerlig

The Swedish furniture giant, Ikea, is known for their sleek, modern designs. However, in recent years, they’ve started to incorporate natural elements into their pieces. This shift towards environmentally friendly and sustainable design led them to collaborate with Dutch designer, Ilse Crawford, on the Sinnerlig collection.

The word “sinnerlig” is Swedish for “sensual” or “pleasurable”. This collection aims to create a harmonious blend of nature and design, incorporating materials like cork, bamboo, and glass. The Sinnerlig installation at Ikea showcases these elements in a stunning and unique way.

The Design of the Installation

The installation is a series of interconnected spaces that invite visitors to experience the Sinnerlig collection in a tactile way. The first space features a table made of cork, a material that is both environmentally friendly and soft to the touch. The table is surrounded by chairs and benches also made of cork, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Moving to the next space, visitors encounter a large circular rug made of jute, a natural fiber that is both durable and soft. The rug is surrounded by shelves and cabinets made of bamboo, a material known for its strength and sustainability. The shelves are filled with plants and natural decor, creating a sense of calm and relaxation.

The final space in the installation features a large glass cabinet filled with hand-blown glass. These pieces were created in collaboration with Swedish glassmakers and showcase the natural beauty of the material. The cabinet also features a unique lighting system that highlights the colors and textures of the glass pieces.

The Impact of Sinnerlig on Design

The Sinnerlig collection and installation showcase Ikea’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly design. By incorporating natural materials into their products, they are creating pieces that are not only beautiful but also better for the planet. This approach to design is becoming increasingly popular, as consumers become more aware of their impact on the environment.

In addition to this, the Sinnerlig collection also showcases the importance of tactile experiences in design. By inviting visitors to touch and interact with the pieces, Ikea is creating a more immersive and meaningful experience for their customers.
